Pilates Exercise Equipment

You've heard about the wonderful benefits of Pilates and would love to give it a try, but the idea (or perhaps the cost) of using a trainer just isn't something you're interested in.

Now is the time when you should really look at starting this workout on your own. And to do so you'll need some basic Pilates exercise equipment. Sure even that cost money, but far less than going to classes or hiring a trainer.

The good thing is that Pilates is a great workout that will give you real and visual results. And the number of items you need is very small. It's a great way to exercise for a beginner or someone already into a workout routine.

The first thing you'll need isn't really equipment, it's a simple DVD that will show you a typical workout. It's kind of like being in a class but you'll be following along with the people on the screen. And there will be no one else there to stare at you. This is probably the most important purchase you'll make.

The reason is that it makes your routine simple. You just follow along with the instructor as if he's in the room. It's almost like having a trainer in your living room. You'll get the full workout without any holes and you'll be motivated to follow along.

The next thing you'll need is a Pilates ball. These large, air filled rubber balls are a blast to work with, plus they'll workout your entire body. By having to stay balanced on the ball you'll be forced to use every muscle you have, even the ones that aren't normally being worked in whatever movement you happen to be doing. That's why a Pilates ball is so popular among people doing exercises that are not part of the Pilates program.

Other pieces of equipment you should seriously consider are a floor mat and resistance bands. The floor mat is essential to ensure a safe workout. It may be your most important investment, even more so if your floors are made of wood.

Resistance bands are not a necessity. In fact, if you are just starting out, you may want to hold off on this purchase until later. They will make the routine more interesting and challenging for someone already fit, but may be too much for beginners.

There are other pieces of Pilates exercise equipment available, but only add them as you progress and need them. You'll see results without them as long as you stick to the routine.

Safety should be your number one concern, and a Pilates workout is very easy on the body. It's even used in some physical rehab centers. That's one reason the routines are so popular. Anyone at any age can experience the health benefits.
